GTA 4 changed the series forever with its groundbreaking execution of ragdoll physics.
After the success of classic GTA titles, Rockstar took a different approach. GTA 4 used ragdoll physics for all NPC characters, a stark contrast to previous games which used preset animations. When hit with enough force, NPCs reacted with dynamic movements.
Rockstar has reached game-changing ragdoll physics with new engines. It no longer used the older Renderware found in classic 3D games, and instead opted for Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE), along with Euphoria Physics. It completely changed the way players enjoyed GTA 4.
How GTA 4’s Improved Ragdoll Physics Changed The Entire Experience For Gamers Around The World
GTA 4 made good use of modern technology, at least for its time. Ragdoll physics was just one of the most defining features of this game. Players, until today, spend hours falling down stairs or pushing pedestrians.
Here’s how Ragdoll Physics improved the GTA 4 player experience.
Mechanics are fun to play with
GTA 4 prides itself on a more realistic experience, which is made better by ragdoll physics. Players can crash their vehicles and fly through the windshield.
In previous games, the player fell flat on the ground like a pancake. GTA 4 makes it more interesting by bouncing the player around a bit. Thanks to the reworked dynamic, each brutal moment is experienced very differently.
This is just one of many examples that can be found in GTA 4. Players can push random pedestrians down a flight of stairs. Gunfights are more realistic when enemies limp downward, and players will turn around before they hit the ground.
All of this is achieved with new ragdoll physics.
GTA 4 is much more dynamic than previous games
Take a look at the video above, where CJ manages to fall off the side of the mountain. It can be amusing to see him wave his arms just before landing. However, everything is done in a very static way. The Renderware engine lacked the ability to use deep ragdoll physics.
As a result, GTA 4 stands out compared to older games. Imagine if it was Niko in the video above instead of CJ. It would bounce many times, much like a basketball, and each fall would be very different from the last. To GTA 4’s credit, the improved physics make it really dynamic.
GTA 4 allows the player to get creative
It’s not just ragdoll physics that alter the gaming experience. Game physics can also lead to some very memorable moments.
There is an infamous feature in GTA 4 known as the Swing Glitch. Players can drive near the seesaw with any vehicle they choose, and they will immediately fly through the air by sheer force. It’s quite a sight to behold, which is why there are so many compilation videos out there.
Players can also exit the vehicle, but doing so will cause them to fall to their untimely demise. That’s where the ragdoll physics come in. It’s insane fun, but it’s what makes GTA 4 so much fun to play.
The game’s physics are unlike any other in the series. It rewards the player for being creative and discovering different ways to make Niko and other pedestrians suffer.
